Solana Foundation has joined the new x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation, deepening its commitment to payments infrastructure for AI agents and internet services. The move places Solana alongside major technology companies including Amazon, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, Microsoft, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa in developing open standards for web-native payments.
The x402 protocol provides a framework for APIs, applications, and AI agents to pay for access to data and services directly over the web without requiring custom billing systems. Originally developed by Coinbase, the protocol utilizes the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' status code and is designed to enable autonomous software payments using stablecoins in a pay-per-request model.
This partnership positions Solana as core financial infrastructure for the internet, with the network already reaching billions of online users and optimized for autonomous software payments. The x402 ecosystem includes partners like Cloudflare, Google, and Vercel, who are adding support to allow APIs and web services to charge via the protocol, potentially revolutionizing how digital services are monetized online.
