The x402 protocol, originally developed by Coinbase for AI agent payments, has moved to the Linux Foundation under neutral community governance. AWS, Visa, Mastercard, Google, Microsoft, Stripe, Shopify, American Express, Circle, Polygon Labs, and Solana Foundation have joined as backers. Current data indicates the Solana Foundation accounts for nearly 65% of x402 transaction volume this year. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong emphasized that AI agents will soon outnumber humans in online transactions, positioning x402 as the missing internet payment layer.
