Chinese authorities have successfully pressured Apple into removing Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app developed by Block CEO Jack Dorsey, from the China App Store. According to CoinDesk, Apple removed the app at the request of Beijing's internet regulator, with Chinese authorities claiming Bitchat violated rules for online services with public opinion or social mobilization capabilities. The timing is particularly significant as the app has been used as a tool during recent protests in Madagascar, Uganda, Nepal, Indonesia, and Iran, where authorities attempted to restrict internet access to curb dissent.

What makes this development especially noteworthy is Bitchat's unique architecture. The app runs entirely over Bluetooth and mesh networks with no internet connection required, making it functionally impossible for governments to block through conventional internet shutdowns or firewall filtering. The app has been downloaded more than three million times across platforms, with over 92,000 downloads in the past week alone, demonstrating its growing adoption in regions where digital freedom is restricted. This move by China represents another front in the ongoing global tension between decentralized technology and state control over digital communications.
